Equipment

  • Large Skillet (preferably heavy-bottomed or cast iron)
  • Tongs (for turning the brats)
  • Lid (optional, for simmering)
  • Meat Thermometer (optional, to ensure the brats are fully cooked)

Ingredients

  • 4 bratwurst sausages pork, chicken, or plant-based
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 cup beer or broth optional, for simmering
  • 1 medium onion optional, sliced for sautéing
  • 1 bell pepper optional, sliced for sautéing
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prep the Ingredients

  • Slice onions and peppers, if using.
  • Have your beer or broth ready if you plan to simmer the brats.

Heat the Skillet

  • Place a large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil or butter. Let it heat until shimmering but not smoking.

Sear the Brats

  • Add the bratwurst to the skillet, ensuring they don’t overlap. Sear them for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.

Simmer (Optional)

  • If using beer or broth, pour it into the skillet until it reaches halfway up the brats. Cover and let simmer for 10-12 minutes on low heat.

Final Sear

  • Remove the lid and increase the heat to medium-high to evaporate any remaining liquid. Sear for 1-2 minutes to crisp up the brats.

Cook the Vegetables (Optional)

  • Push the brats to one side of the skillet and add onions and peppers. Sauté until caramelized (5-7 minutes).

Check Doneness

  • Ensure the brats have reached an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for pork or beef, or 165°F (74°C) for chicken or turkey.

Serve

  • Transfer brats to a plate, let rest for 1-2 minutes, and serve on buns with your favorite toppings or alongside your choice of sides.
